About Manpuku-ji Temple About Manpuku-ji Temple
A Soto Zen temple situated on a vast site in the Nakagawa rural district, about 3 km from the center of Kakunodate—one of Japan’s leading tourist destinations. Surrounded by mountains and spring water, the grounds are colored by numerous trees, such as cherry, cedar, maple, chestnut, and sal, along with seasonal flowers. Amid the silence, the chirping of birds and the sounds of insects let you feel the atmosphere of Japan’s four seasons. Squirrels, raccoon dogs, and serows are occasionally seen, and it is a heavy snowfall area where snow can exceed 2 meters in winter.
A Time to Face Yourself
An experience to quietly release your heart in nature, away from the hustle and bustle of Kakunodate’s old castle-town charm and the samurai district. Including a tea gathering with the 25th head priest of Manpuku-ji, who was born and raised here, it is a special time to step away from your everyday life and face yourself.
